The William Howard Taft Cigar (60 x 6) is a hand-crafted using a rare Ecuadorian cigar wrapper named Desflorado.
Desforado is Spanish for “without flower” and is so named because the tobacco flower is clipped as it is about to bloom sending the tobacco plant into a new growth stage. The result is that the top leaves soak up both new nutrients and the more sun. This gives the cigar its trademark pleasing aromatic blue smoke and subtle spice. Because the de-flowering process is so labor intensive, it is a hard to come by tobacco leaf.
The Binder is from Sumatra. The defining characteristic of the Sumatra Binder is that it has no characteristic. The flavor of the Desflorado wrapper is so pleasing that we didn’t want the binder (typically thick and distinct) to alter the profile of the cigar. The Sumatran Binder does however provide a wonderful burn capacity which is especially important in a 60 ring cigar.
The Long-Filler is Nicaraguan Habano and Cuban seed Dominican Pilot Cubano. Nicaraguan Habano represents some of the finest cigar long- filler available on the market today. Its chief characteristics are that it has an earthy, woody flavor with notes of chocolate and mild pepper. The Piloto Cubano seed is typically a more robust tobacco with hints of cinnamon. This tobacco is grown on small farms throughout the Dominican Republic.
The Deflorado Gordo is the perfect cigar for Taft as it is, like the man, larger than life. Taft was well-traveled and spent a great deal of time in Southeast Asia as Governor-General of the Phillipines, the Caribbean as Governor of Cuba and Latin America. We thought it fitting that his cigar should reflect the same.
